Matthew Lewis, MD, MPH

The Irving Institute helped Dr. Lewis pursue his research despite having realized the potential of precision and genomic medicine to improve outcomes for patients with congenital heart disease relatively late in his training. “The Irving Institute provided a venue for me to explore this interest and develop additional expertise that would otherwise be impossible,” Lewis explains.

“Without the Irving Institute and support from my mentors, I would not have been able to successfully pursue my current line of research inquiry, or attain my current research funding, or had the opportunity to dedicate the majority of my effort to large scale research projects. The Irving Institute made it possible, through support and mentorship, to develop a career focused on translational research.”

Lewis feels his story exemplifies how the Irving Institute facilitates cross-departmental research support, that “allowed me to pursue nontraditional clinical research,” he notes.

“Because of the help and guidance provided by the Irving Institute, I am able to combine clinical and translational research efforts to help the patients I care for on a daily basis.”
