Irving Scholar Seeks to Make Intestinal Transplants as Successful as Kidney and Heart

Irving Institute-supported researcher Joshua Weiner, MD (Irving Scholar, 2023–2026), is working to transform intestinal transplantation - one of the most complex and least successful organ transplants today. His research focuses on training the immune system to better accept transplanted intestines, with the goal of reducing or eliminating lifelong immunosuppression. By leveraging advanced immune-matching strategies and regulatory T cell approaches, his work aims to improve long-term transplant survival. If successful, this could significantly expand access and outcomes for patients who currently depend on long-term IV nutrition.
