Team Expertise and Management Support (TEAMS)

TEAMS is grounded in a history of successfully implementing collaborative team science in our commercialization, special populations, community-based participatory research, and precision medicine pilot programs. TEAMS builds on lessons learned from our experience in implementing team science resources and processes that nurture our interdisciplinary clinical translational ecosystem and ensure that research findings produce meaningful and high-impact outcomes. The TEAMS framework and approach is based on the Formation of Inclusive Teams (FIT) model, developed internally and informed by TEAMS Director Dr. Sandra Soo-Jin Lee’s ethnographic research on successful teams. FIT focuses on dimensions of team composition, communication, synergy, conflict management, and sustainability, and emphasizes support of team diversity and inclusion of underrepresented disciplines and groups. Diversity, as defined by sociocultural, biological, and disciplinary backgrounds, has important implications for innovation and quality of science produced by collaborations of academic scientists. TEAMS supports collaborations to integrate diversity to maximize impact and fulfill goals of equity.

Collaborative team science is also foundational in our TRANSFORM translational workforce development programs and in our strategic interdisciplinary initiatives across Resources and with Columbia University partners.

International Network for the Science of Team Science

INSciTS will create and facilitate a high-impact community that develops and disseminates an evidence-base to support team science and shapes how research is conducted to solve complex problems. INSciTS serves as a conduit to ensure that empirical findings about team science are accessible and useful for effective collaborative practice and policy, bridging both science and praxis.
